Import & Export

Truereq's import function is a very useful way to load your Tree with information you already have outside of Truereq. You can import requirements into your Tree from a standard comma-separated-value (CSV) file. You can also export the contents of your Tree to a CSV file. Many other applications can export to a CSV file, so if you are currently using another program, you can use the following instructions as an example. The easiest way to set up your data for import is by using Microsoft Excel.

Setting up your data and importing requirements

  1. Create an Excel spreadsheet with three columns: requirement, owner, and description (but do not actually enter these headings). The owner must match an existing user in your Truereq Workspace, in the form "lastname, firstname." The requirement cell will be the name of the requirement in your Tree. The description cell will be the requirement description text area in Truereq.

  2. On the file menu of your Excel spreadsheet, click Save as. In the Save as type list, choose CSV (Comma delimited).
  3. Create a folder in your Tree where you want your requirements imported. Select that folder.
  4. Choose Import from the File menu. In the dialog that comes up, find the CSV file you created and click the Import button. Your requirements will be imported into your folder in the tree, with one requirement for each line in your Excel spreadsheet.

Note: If you are using other programs, you need to get your data into a text file with one line per requirement, in the following syntax:
    "requirement name","ownerlastname, ownerfirstname","description"

Exporting requirements
When you export your tree, Truereq generates a CSV file for the subset of the selected item in the Tree. To export requirements:

  1. Select the top item in the part of the Tree you wish to export.
  2. Choose Export from the file menu. A dialog will come up asking where you want to save the file, and what name to give it.
  3. Navigate to the location on your disk where you want to save the file, rename it appropriately, and click Export. Truereq will generate a CSV file with three columns: requirement, owner, and description. You can then import that CSV file into Excel.
